Does the thought of a juicy burger make your mouth water?
Does the thought eating a golden retriever absolutely disgust you??
Why are we completely comfortable with eating one animal and not the other?
Have you ever asked yourself this question? I haven’t either… until recently.
“Humans are naturally averse to blood and killing unless we’ve been desensitized. Since we care about animals and don’t want them to suffer, a good amount of mental gymnastics are necessary in order to feel perfectly comfortable consuming them – or more specifically, consuming the tiny handful of species we have designated as edible.” Melanie Joy, Ph.D., Ed.M.
We are required to alleviate a major inconsistency between our deeply rooted values and our behaviours… by performing mental gymnastics.
Have you every questioned your belief system regarding meat consumption? I NEVER did until 9 months ago. I had consumed animal flesh my entire life. I just thought it was the normal thing to do and the vegans were just hippie-fied and well… a little crazy.
With a world of GMO’s, toxic chemical laden foods, and animals pumped with antibiotics. We’ve awakened to a world of uncertainty and sadness in our food production and distribution…. and in my journey to completely scrutinize everything I put into my and my family’s bodies I have been forced to really look at my and the world’s meat consumption.
“We send one species to the butcher and give our love and kindness to another apparently for no other reason than that it’s the way things are. When our attitudes and behaviors toward animals are so inconsistent, and this inconsistency is so unexamined, we can safely say we’ve been fed absurdities.” – Melanie Joy, Ph.D., Ed.M.
Why this inconsistency? Is it because golden retriever is not that palatable? No? Have you ever tried it? Well 11 countries around the world still consume dog meat.
As we examine every morsel that enters our body… we must examine the animal flesh that enters as well.
I urge you to watch this Ted Talk by Melanie Joy, Ph.D., Ed.M. the author of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism.
Challenge your existing mindset and find the true nature of your meat eating habits.

Are you afraid to question your reasoning for consuming animals?
It’s hard isn’t it?
The American culture is built on animal, dairy, and egg production and consumption.
We are told from a very young age we need our protein and to drink our milk. Most Americans live for the weekend summer BBQ, steak dinners, milkshakes, and bacon and egg breakfast combo.
But who really is benefiting from this high volume animal consumption? Our Health? The World? Big Business?
The more research I do and the more information I uncover… the more I question these “never-questioned” cultural beliefs.
I’ve challenged and questioned my existing mindset. My belief system has been rocked and it feels scary and uncomfortable… and I’ve been faced with much resistance.
Doing something all your life and waking up to the fact that you deeply don’t believe in it… is down right disturbing.
But now I have discovered my truth. The feeling of empowerment is left and I am finally living my (food consumption) truth.
What do you think? What’s YOUR (food consumption) truth? Have you ever questioned it? Are you willing to?
Live Hippily… and challenge existing your mindset!!
