All right now…. don’t cheat.
On average how much sugar do you and your kids consume a day? Do you know?
Okay maybe give it your best guess.
Most of us don’t know the answer to this question… I didn’t. Once I actually knew the answer, it was life altering.
As a former sugar addict (unaware of this fact), I can assure you the only intention behind this post is not to shame or bring a feeling of guilt to your belly… simply to provide the information I’ve discovered that’s helped me transform my family from consuming high levels of sugar to low levels of sugar.
We didn’t remove sugar entirely! That would be crazy?
Well, it’s my future personal plan but let’s face it, sugar satisfies a part of us that no other molecule can… and in a world where you would literally have to live as a hermit in a remote cave in the woods eating berries (wait those have sugar too!) never mind. It’s impossible. We are faced with this “sugar thing” daily!
This simple experiment and the information it organically produced has been the fuel that has kept this former sugar addict on track (with moderate splurges).
So I had to take a step back and see what I was dealing with. I began to become keenly aware of the sugar reality! The current food revolution is fuelled by our society becoming more conscious of where our food comes from and what is actually in it. Before we all believed if it was on the shelf… it was safe. HOW WRONG WE WERE!
Now we know… this is a big part of our community. Sharing information that Big Food and Big Pharma companies don’t want us to know.
We are aware… and sugar consumption is just one element we must address…. as it is one of the most toxic ingredients in our food. The majority don’t know or understand what it’s doing to our bodies. Sugar has been referred to as the “white devil” and the popular saying “Sugar feeds Cancer” is based on reality. Even foods labelled as “healthy” are insanely loaded with sugar!!
It obviously has a bad rap and it’s paramount we understand more about this notorious Mr. Sugar McSugarson and the role it plays in our lives.
In a little experiment I did at home, with no intervention. I counted everything from sugar in yoghurt, toast, treats, and anything else that went into their bellies.. I read every label on every box, counted out the amount of dark chocolate chips I would normally give them and did the math. Everything was taken into consideration… well one exception… fruit.
Are you read for this?
On average my two kids (1.5 and 3.5 years old) would each consume up to 20 and 25 grams or 6.25 teaspoons of sugar a day!
And this was just at home. I didn’t even attempt to count what they “potentially” consumed at school or when I wasn’t playing helicopter mom… I made an educated guess and I conservatively added at least 10 grams or 2+ additional teaspoons of sugar.
Do I dare imagine they could intake over 30 – 35 grams of sugar a day? That more than 8 teaspoons of sugar!! WTF!
(Insert guilty-mom-gut sign here).
This amount of sugar consumed existed even with an intention to feed my kids healthy and nutritious foods. I thought I was doing it all right.
I was in a state of shock and experienced an overwhelming feeling of complete irresponsibly. This was my job. My job to protect my family and I was failing.
This was the inception of my sugar awakening.
This was simply mind boggling. What I’ve read and begun to understand that the daily recommended amount of sugar according to the American Heart Association was a follows:
Adult Men: 37.5 g (9.4 tsp)
Adult Women: 25 g (6.25 tsp)
Pre-teen & Teenagers: 21 – 33 g (5.25 – 8.25 tsp)
Children 4-8: 12.5 g (3.125 tsp)
Preschool: 16.7 g (4.175 tsp)
The daily recommended amount of sugar for my kid’s ages ranged between 12.5 – 16.7 tsp. My kids were potentially consuming 3 times as much as they should!
Continuing in my quest of sugar research, the information I now know has greatly assisted me in pivoting cravings and simply making better choices.
Maybe it can help you too.
Not only do our children rely on us to keep them safe from this addictive substance but our our bodies do too!
I hope to inspire you to just become aware of the amount of sugar you and your family consume. That’s the first step.
Sugar Awareness Challenge
Are you willing to take the challenge?
Before making any changes to your and your kids food choices, investigate closely the amount of sugar each of you intake on a daily basis. I took a three days (Including one weekend day where consumption tends to spike.) and averaged it out.
Do the math… where do you stand compared to the recommended amount? The first step to any change is awareness and acceptance that change must be made.
Are you willing to do a little home experiment? Do you just not want to know? OR have you entirely quit sugar?
Please share! We are all on this journey together.
Live Hippily… and get to know Mr. Sugar McSugarson!!
